The Re-Naming of HOTSPUR (Thursday - April 1, 2010)
(Mazatlan, Mexico) Because of superstitious peer cruiser pressure, we had a de-naming and re-naming ceremony for Hotspur. Apparently, sailor lore dictates that very bad things will happen if you don’t! I guess this is the derivation of those very obnoxious "You will die if you don’t send this to 20 friends..." chain letters. And, of course, we acquiesced.
The kids participated (including Chandler from ‘Windfall’/’Hana Crew’... and yes, they will have to have a re-naming ceremony as well!) We poured champagne on the bow and made offerings to the sea gods and wind gods. Then, we drank what was left. Jim asked me not to make the announcement on the Mazatlan Cruiser’s Net that morning, which offended me because I already had my little speech written out. But I said, "Okay, honey." And I had a smile on my face, too, by the way. I suppose it was a good thing we didn’t tell everyone... everyone would have showed up to drink the free booze!
Now, we’re official and looking forward to solving more problems. Next on the list, aligning the engine... did I mention the guys didn’t show today? I’m in such a good mood over the import documents and boat decal that I just don’t care. Of course... it could be the champagne...
