CHUBASCO Blows!
After two years of living in Mexico aboard a boat, we experienced our first CHABASCO last night in Santa Rosalia. A "chubasco" is a thunderous squall that can occur unannounced, and in our case at 3am! The wind gusted up to 35 knots and the lightening luckily didn’t cause any problems. The boats in the small anchorage in Santa Rosalia are another story, however.
With the wind howling and coughing upon us, a couple of boat unfortunately dragged. One sailor tried to bring his anchor up and when he did, a large blanket covered his anchor. He had no holding at all! He banged into a couple of pangas and eventually was able to tie up to another boat to keep from colliding with others. Another two boats "kissed", if you will. No damage ensued, but getting control of the boats was a challenge.
Jim and I were both awake from 3am to 530am until the gusts started to temper down. We had to take down the sun shades and it was a quick The rain was minimal. It didn’t blow over as quickly as we anticipated. We slept in late in case you’re wondering.
