Whale Sharks (Wednesday 8/12/09)
Sailed in fantastic 20+ knot winds from Ensenada Quemado to La Mona this morning... where we came across a couple whale sharks! Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the ocean... not to be mistaken with 'whales', which are mammals. Whale sharks can get up to 60' in length. They are plankton/pelagic fish, crustacean and squid eaters and so are totally harmless... except for their size and that BIG tail! We got some awesome video footage that we're going to try to upload to YouTube (I will post it on the blog when it's ready). It was thrilling to watch them swim around... sucking massive amounts of water through their feeding filters. We anchored the boat and took the dinghy out hoping to get in the water with them, but they had moved on. (A few days later, Jim, the kids, and Rob and Jo off s/v 'Blue Moon' swam with the whale sharks for an hour or so. They were very surprised at how HUGE they really are when you're up close and personal!) We absolutely MUST get to Bahia Los Angeles tomorrow for fresh produce. The truck was scheduled to come in this afternoon, so hopefully we will be able to purchase tons of fruits and veggies... which we are completely out of except for the canned variety.
