Beached Whale on San Francisquito (Sunday 8/2/09)

Beached Bryde's Whale"Kelp infested crap-hole"... this is Tim's description of San Francisquito where we stayed three nights in the most glorious breeze ever! Dunno, maybe it's just the teenage perspective. As for Jim and me, we sat in our beach chairs on the bow in the evenings sipping wine and enjoying the twinkling of stars overhead... and the delicious breeze! The breeze was fantastic! The only downside as far as we could see was that the water was choppy and the currents a bit strong, so no one but Jim ventured to swim and he only did so for a minute. Also, there was a dead brydes whale washed up on the beach, which Tame Pelicansmade for a soupy mess in the bay. The kids and I were hoping for a cool science study... this being our first beached whale experience. Unfortunately it wasn't skeletal, but instead it was in super decomposition mode and looked as if it had filled with gas and exploded! Nasty! A large sea lion died on the other side and reeked to high heaven. I guess the breeze blew the stench off because it was still a grateful respite after being in the stifling, muggy heat of Santa Rosalia. Pelicans here are almost tame. Several came up to the boat and hung out... waiting to be fed, I suppose. One followed us up on the beach and hung out within hands reach.
