A mom's worst nightmare
I am the only adult on the beach with my 2 kids and 4 other boat kids when I look out and see the fin. All the kids are in the water. "What am I going to do? What if it's a ... no, no, I must calm down." I look down and realize that I don't have my whistle around my neck. I've forgotten it. With the crashing of the surf there is no way the kids can hear me yelling at them to get out of the water. Tim is on his board and the fin is so very close to him. Gulp!
I jump up off my mat in the warm sand and my heart skips several beats. The fin emerges again from behind a crashing wave. I begin to panic! The kids aren't paying any attention. Then a second fin breaks the surface, "A pack of hungry sharks! Now wait a minute... do they travel in packs?" The children are oblivious. The music begins pounding in my head... Da-da - Dada- dadadadadadadadadadada!
I rush to the water's edge and wave frantically. The children are oblivious some more. One of the kids looks up and waves back at me. "No! No! Get out of the water!" I am pointing and gesturing wildly for them to return to the beach. They wave at me and one shows me how he can jump into the crashing wave and body surf. "Yes... that's really good. Now GET OUT OF THE WATER!"
"Oh, wait a minute. Look! Dolphins! Aren't they cute? Look how curious? Look how close they are to the kids! How cool is that!"
