Flabby and the Falacy (Friday February 5, 2010)
Before we went cruising, I read a number of cruising books... books that talked on and on about the physical attributes of sailing: how muscular you become, how much weight you lose, how much healthier you eat, blah, Blah, BLAH!
Since beginning our cruising exploit November 2008, I have gained 18 lbs! Eighteen! EIGHTEEN! I am pretty sure by the jiggling of my abs that it is NOT muscle! I have never been so fat in all my life. Ever. Therefore, since being in Mazatlan I have started a vegetarian food regimen to help shed this unwanted (and unsightly) weight. Mazatlan affords me the opportunity to get off the boat and walk regularly (we are at the dock in the marina afterall!). There are also plentiful varieties of fruits and vegetables in town... such a breath of fresh air after staying all summer in the Sea of Cortez where wilted and ravaged vegetable varieties consisted of stalks of bitter tasting celery, shriveled numbers of cucumbers, very expensive mangoes, only iceberg lettuce, and picked over fruit out of moldy cartons.
Jim has maintained his skinny self... Sr. Ectomorph. He can eat anything, drink anything, and he stays fit, trim, muscular, lanky. Me... I am pretty sure I am an ectomorph, too... just a softer and more-of-me version. The diet is going well. I have shredded quite a bit in only four weeks. Unfortunately, this is going to have to be a lifestyle change... not just a temporary thing. So I say to all the cruising folks that became trim and thin while cruising... Let them EAT CAKE!... because I sure can't.
