Bye Bye Turtle, Hello Tuna!
We waved goodbye to Turtle Bay after topping off with diesel, unloading trash and purchasing some drinking water. One propane tank is empty, but we didn't want to pay their outrageous fee of $25USD for 2 gallons. We have enough to make it to Cabo. We found Turtle Bay to be full of lovely people and quiet tranquility. Thank goodness for the internet cafe there, although the town's electricity went out right before we entered! We walked around for a couple of hours until electricity was restored and hoofed it back to the internet cafe.
We pulled the anchor up at around noon and headed south. 15 or 20 miles later, the reels screamed and ran! 80 lbs. of test wasn't strong enough for one... whatever was on the other end made a mad getaway. Fortunately, Don and Tim each landed 45 lb. Yellow Fin tuna on the other 2 rods. Tasty! Tim was very excited! I got a picture (the hairy, white legs are Jim's... not mine!). We motored for 2 nights... very smooth. The fact we rested so well at Turtle Bay paid off because we all feel great!
At 2am on 12/4 we had steam and smoke filling up the cabin through our radios. We turned the engine off. 25 miles offshore! Jim went on deck and reefed the mainsail in the dark so we wouldn't rock-n-roll around so much. Our alternator belt was shredded! Thank the Great Maker that we had spares on board and that the solution was quick and fairly simple! 1 1/2 hours later, we were riding the waves again!
