The Wreck of s/v 'Little Fawn' (Saturday - May 08, 2010)
It happens sometimes... it is unthinkable, but it does happen. Sailing has its risks, as our friend Jim Brown on s/v Little Fawn knows... unfortunately and all too well. We met Jim in Santa Rosalia, MX last year... June and July 2009. He’s a smart guy with a great sense of humor. You might hear him called 'Thai Jim'... and there are numerous other nicknames for him. We, however, affectionately refer to him as ‘Naughty Jim’ for reasons I won’t get into in this post.
In his recent email to us, he describes grounding his 35' Chris Craft in Agua Verde, Mexico last month. As a single-hander (sailing a boat solo), the risks of getting very tired and falling asleep are great. It has happened to many and Jim unfortunately wasn’t exempt. We understand that during the initial rescue attempt to save his vessel that Little Fawn was de-masted and a huge hole was punched in the port side hull. Thankfully, no one was injured. Jim was able to recover most of his belongings from Little Fawn.
The photo above is from the Latitude 38 issue taken by Southern Cross. The rescue team was comprised of other cruisers that donated their time and effort to help Jim save Little Fawn. The cruising community is fantastic! For more details and Little Fawn rescue photos, see the article dated April 21, 2010 in Latitude 38 ‘Lectronic Latitude titled "Little Fawn Wrecked - Then Rescued". Little Fawn is currently on the hard in Puerto Escondido, MX and Jim reports that the hull, keel and rudder have been repaired already. He has a great attitude and considers this a ‘refit’. He plans to be back in the water within the year. We hope to see you soon, Jim, and best wishes!
