Red Tide

Posted by meri on Thu, 11/18/2010 - 23:43

I don't know if this was instigated by the Bloody Mary-thon, but we have a red tide in the harbor and for miles outside the ocean. Miles and miles of the red hue floats on top of the water. I thought it was blood at first. Then, paint? But no, it is the algae bloom and it is very toxic. So far, we don't seem to have many dead fish and the bloom itself doesn't stink.

Bloody Mary-Thon

Ed - BartenderIt started at 10am... by this mild-mannered truck driver. Ed looks innocent, but don't be fooled! He organized the Old Marina's ump-teenth annual Bloody-Mary-thon. He also was the bartender.

FIRE!

Posted by meri on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 14:16

A fire started in one of the old, wooden buildings on the malecon near the marina on a clear, windless morning last week. I was up town doing laundry (exciting events tend to take place when I'm doing laundry). Jim took these photos from the boat which is docked in the Old Marina in Santa Rosalia, Mexico.

Sperm Whale and the Sad Facts

Posted by meri on Tue, 11/09/2010 - 16:58

Wounds on a sperm whaleIt's rare that a whale comes into the harbor in Santa Rosalia, Mexico although according to the old timers whales used to be an everyday occurence outside the breakwater.

Comparison of October Cruising Expenses - 2009 & 2010

Posted by meri on Mon, 11/08/2010 - 16:25

We are eating out more now that we're in Santa Rosalia. We are not buying equipment this month for the boat... BIG savings! I'm thrilled that for the month of October we spent less than $1000 US for four people, one dog and one cat. Finally!

Together Again At Last... or For the Last?

Posted by meri on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 19:44
Okay, so the title is a little sappy. But when the crew of Third Day arrived yesterday afternoon, the crews of Hotspur and Just A Minute were thrilled. It feels like it's been months since we've seen each other... the trifecta... all together. We were the three boats that last year went against the odds and headed north to outrun Hurricane Jimena. Jimena caused devastating damage to Mulege and to Santa Rosalia.

Chess at THE PALAPA OF KNOWLEDGE

Posted by meri on Wed, 11/03/2010 - 03:39

Tim has been occupied lately. He has wrangled some of the cruising captains into playing against him at the age old game of chess. In fact, he played all through Carolyne's birthday festivities, stopping only for food and cake and ice cream.

Day of the Dead and Halloween on the Baja

Posted by meri on Wed, 11/03/2010 - 02:49

Friday, October 29th through November 2nd in Santa Rosalia, Mexico

The goblins and devils appeared throughout the above dates at different functions throughout town. There was some trick-or-treating, though not much at the storefronts. The kids here don't say 'Trick or Treat'. They say 'Tricky Tricky Halloween'.

Halloween and Carolyne’s 11th Birthday

Posted by meri on Tue, 11/02/2010 - 18:20

Death BrideLiving on a boat and orchestrating birthday parties like the ones we used to do at home just don’t jive. I’m always amazed when I hear about the birthday extravaganzas that my sister concocts for my niece... themed wonderlands in her own backyard with fantastic costumes and vellum ribboned invites, chocolate fountains and marvelous cakes topped with mile-high icing creatures.

This entire building is a costume shop We're working on our 4th week in Santa Rosalia, Mexico and we're in no hurry to go anywhere else presently.
